Many Ontario voters are unaware that they will have the opportunity to have their say in Ontario's first referendum in almost 100 years on October 10th, 2007. This referendum has to do with how we choose our MPPs and voters will be asked to choose between two electoral systems - the old SMP (single-member plurality) system and the new system recommended by the Citizens Assembly – MMP (mixed-member proportional).
Elections Onatrio has launched a website at YourBigDecision.ca to explain the two systems. It is important that voters educate themselves before Election Day in order to make an informed decision. There is a lot of information to absorb so it is important to start as soon as possible.
I encourage everyone to get the information they need to make the right choice. I have information and links available on my website as well, but they are decidely biased in favour of the new MMP system. I will be writing more about why I believe MMP to be the right choice for Ontario, but for now I ask that you get yourself educated.
